The Honda Civic Type R is a super quick hot hatch that’s designed to go as fast as possible on the road – one of the main reasons we decided to get it in for a long-term test. It’s a rival to the Volkswagen Golf R, Audi S3 and the SEAT Leon Cupra. F
The Type R’s turbocharged engine is at the heart of the driving experience – it has 306hp and Honda has billed it as a ‘race car for the road’. It’s designed to go around corners incredibly fast, with lots of grip.
On the inside the Type R is full of racy features, such as an alloy gear knob, metal pedals and lights that tell you when to change up a gear. There’s a ‘+R’ button too, to make the suspension firmer and give the car a more agile feel.
It’s available in two versions – the normal Type R or the Type R GT, which adds a Garmin sat-nav, as well as driver assistance systems such as lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking and traffic sign recognition.

The Civic Type R’s interior takes the normal Civic’s practicality and adds some nice sporty touches. The race-style seats hug you tightly for fast cornering, and are 20mm lower than in the normal Civic. Good news though – they’re comfortable on long, boring motorway journeys, too.
There are slivers of carbon fibre on the dash, and the steering wheel is trimmed partly in red leather. Tap the +R button to put the car into its sportiest mode and the rev counter glows red – it’s all designed to put you in a racy mood.

The Honda Civic Tourer is one of the more strikingly styled estate cars around, and it’s also incredibly practical (the boot is huge), efficient and comfortable. Its rivals are the Skoda Octavia Estate, Ford Focus Estate, and the Seat Leon ST.
Prices start from £18,790 and if you buy your new Civic Tourer using carwow you can save £3,131 on average. A new Honda Civic is planned for 2017, so savings for the current model will get bigger as the new model gets closer.
In 2015 it was updated with a new headlight design with integrated LED lights, new bumpers front and rear, and a subtle new look inside, too.
What hasn’t changed is the Civic’s huge boot that has the capacity to see off rivals with litres to spare. Although even the Honda’s load bay is trumped by the boot in the Peugeot 308 SW.
While the Tourer spoils you with boot space, Honda hasn’t gone crazy when it comes to engine choices – there’re only two, a 1.8-litre petrol or a 1.6-litre diesel. It’s the last of those that should prove the more popular choice thanks to its extremely low running costs and meaty power delivery.
There are better cars to drive in the class, but the Civic Tourer isn’t bad in any particular way. The ride is decent but the body control is not. There are optional adaptive dampers with a Sport mode, but the Honda is far from a Ford Focus in terms of driver engagement and fun behind the wheel.
All models come with alloy wheels, electric windows all round and climate control, but get to the bottom of the spec sheet and you’ll also see standard emergency braking. That’s a relative rarity in any class of car and a nice feature to have in a family wagon such as the Civic Tourer.

Honda likes to align its Civic away from the likes of the Vauxhall Astra and Ford Focus, choosing to go after the classier Volkswagen Golf instead. That’s evident when you sit on the driver’ seat where you are met by high-quality plastics and a dashboard design that mixes sharp edges, straight lines and swoops to decent effect. In 2015 new upholstery, revised door trims and dashboard panels were introduced, but nonetheless the Civic still lacks the appealing simplicity of the Volkswagen Golf’s dashboard.

Arguably it’s the boot that matters most here, and while Honda appears to have gone for style over substance on the outside, that couldn’t be further from the truth once you poke your head inside – at 642 litres it’s boot eclipses even the larger Skoda Octavia Estate. There’s plenty of room for rear passengers, and while some taller testers complain about a lack of headroom in the front, it’s generally comfortable all-round. Reviewers say the seats are firm but supportive and there’s plenty of adjustment for the steering wheel and seat.
Honda has made sure there’s plenty of space to hide bits and bobs – you get two lidded cubbys between the front seats, a glovebox and door bins that can’t quite manage a litre bottle of water.

The Mercedes-AMG E63 is a mid-size saloon with a classy cabin and a monster of an engine. It rivals other ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ executive cars such as the BMW M5, Audi RS6 and Jaguar XFR – all of which are about to be replaced by new versions. The regular E-Class looks a bit too classy to carry the AMG badge so this most expensive model gets vast air intakes, swollen wheel arches, menacing black trim and a couple of V8 badges to hint at the monster that lives under the bonnet. While the outside is decidedly more sinister than the regular car, the cabin’s class and sophistication remains. The E63 takes that stylish design and adds a bunch of suitably sporty touches including a flat-bottomed steering wheel, new leather-trimmed sports seats and numerous AMG badges. The 64-colour ambient lighting is standard on the E63 alongside the large infotainment screen that replaces the traditional analogue dials. Passenger space is excellent in the saloon and even better in the Estate thanks to its more upright roofline. Boot space in the saloon is above class average while the estate is among class leaders for capacity. However, you don’t get an AMG model for its practicality, but for the masterpiece of an engine. The E-Class doesn’t disappoint – nestled under the bulging bonnet is a 4.0-litre V8 that can produce up to 604hp in the most-powerful E63 S model. Regular AMG models get a ‘mere’ 563hp – still nothing short of astonishing in a four-door saloon. The E63 is four-wheel drive only, so 0-62mph acceleration times are predictably mind-blowing, completing the sprint in 3.5 seconds. It’s good at taking corners at speed too, making it arguably the most well-rounded AMG model yet. E63 S models also have the ability to disengage the front driven wheels for some good old-fashioned sideways tyre destruction. One thing is certain – the E63 isn’t cheap. However, if you take into account the two infotainment screens, the plethora of autonomous driving systems, the well-made interior and combine them with the impressive pace, you have a well-equipped, practical saloon that can easily challenge a supercar for speed.
